The Land Transport Department said more than 2,000 taxis are now equipped with partitions to help prevent drivers from catching the coronavirus.

Director-General Chirute Visalachitra said the department and SCG Chemicals Co. were installing partitions free to protect drivers and passengers alike from virus-containing droplets.

Since the installation project started on Sept. 16, 2,192 taxis have been equipped with the safety partitions. The department and the company planned to install them on 3,000 taxis. Taxi cooperatives and associations were sending their cabs for the work, Chirute said.

Taxi drivers could seek the partition installation at Building 4 at the Land Transport Department in Chatuchak District without prior registration, he said.

Taxi drivers have made up a disproportionate share of Covid-19 deaths and infections in Thailand, with hundreds of drivers having perished since the pandemic began in March last year.
