Even as coronavirus cases plummet around the country, the State Railway of Thailand said Sunday it will restrict travel that could spread Covid-19 by suspending service on 57 local routes starting Tuesday.
SRT Gov Niruj Maneepun said cancellations will affect 13 local lines in the North, 18 in the Northeast, 12 in the South and 14 in the East.
Most cancelled trains start at Hua Lamphong station in Bangkok and include some lines popular with tourists, including service to Kanchanaburi and Hua Hin.
The SRT said the cancellations were meant to support the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration’s desire to limit travel, even though the number of provinces reporting new coronavirus cases has fallen from 39 to 24 to seven in the past three weeks.
The CCSA, however, still sees Bangkok as the main spreader of Covid-19 around the country due to its being the country’s business and governmental hub.
