Phuket International Airport undergoes a last inspection before being allow to reopen June 13.

Phuket International Airport will reopen at midnight tonight, bringing much needed relief to the tourist resort.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand issued the order to allow domestic flights on condition that the airport strictly follow health regulations. International flights in and out of Thailand, other than chartered repatriation flights, are still banned.

Airport General Manager Thanee Chuangchoo said the announcement caught him by surprise, as the government’s Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration had said earlier Friday that reopening likely would occur June 16.

Thanee said the airport was ready, having undergone an inspection by the Health Ministry’s International Quarantine Division on June 9.

He said the sudden restart likely caught airlines off-guard as well, meaning that the doors will be open, but no one will be flying anywhere until Tuesday.

A few more hoops than usual will need to be jumped through by passengers, including registering in advance on the Airports of Thailand mobile app.

Phuket is among the last Thai airport to reopen with CAAT officials citing continuing coronavirus infections there as justification for keeping the air terminal closed.
