Set for Upgrade, Surat Thani Airport Ramps Up Flights

The King’s birthday holiday weekend has been a busy one at Surat Thani Airport which steadily has added flights after reopening in late April.

All flights out of the southern province to Bangkok are sold out today as holiday revelers head back to the capital.

Four airlines now operate 12 flights out of Surat Thani a day, carrying up to 1,800 passengers.

The airport added additional check-in counters for the holiday, but is still struggling to enforce strict social distancing across the facility, as seen in the line to go through security in the departures area.

Surat Thani Airport is one of nine provincial airports set for upgrades under a 5.8-billion-baht investment project by the Department Airports. The others are Krabi, Trang, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Chumphorn in the South and Khon Kaen, Buri Ram, Roi Et and Udon Thani in the Northeast.

The improvements to be made over the next year are to accommodate international flights to and from southern China, the Middle East and Europe, particularly those with widebody aircraft such as Airbus A330 and Boeing 787.
