Thailand joins race to produce coronavirus vaccine

Thai researchers believe they can crank out a vaccine to prevent the coronavirus next year.
The government coronavirus task force put the kibosh on rumors that Songkran would be rescheduled for early July, saying the Cabinet hasn’t even considered new dates yet. Dr. Taweesin Visanuyothin, spokesman for the Covid-19 Situation Administration of Thailand, said current virus-prevention measures must remain and that no dates have yet been considered for the April 13-15 holiday that was canceled due to the country’s coronavirus lockdown. Earlier this week, Culture Minister Itthiphol Kunplome had said he has proposed July 7-9 be the “New Normal Songkran”. If approved, that three-day holiday would fall directly after the July 4-6 Asalaha Bucha long weekend, giving Thais five days off if Friday July 7 wasn’t turned into a holiday as well. Itthiphol had said the issue would be considered at a June 5 CCSA meeting. With a possibly final stage of Thailand’s economic reopening set for July 1, the weeklong party would be either a joyous party after months of lockdown or a raucous spark to a second wave of coronavirus infections as a beleaguered Thai population people jettisons the “new” out of normal and gets back to the old ways of spreading infectious diseases and dying by the hundreds in motorcycle wrecks. Perhaps recognizing the potential for mayhem and mass infections, Itthiphol also suggested an alternate date later in the month to coincide with HM the King’s birthday.
