Bangkok Speeds Anigen-Based Coronavirus Testing to Judge Scale of Covid-19 Epidemic

COVID-19 rapid antigen test testing

Bangkok is speeding up coronavirus testing using antigen tests as the latest weapon in determining the scale of the capital’s Covid-19 infection wave.

Gov. Aswin Kwanmuang said city hall has, so far, deployed officials to conduct rapid Covid-19 tests on residents in six districts. The test kits provide results within 30 minutes and are more 90 percent accurate.

Even though inaccurate tests rarely produce false positives, Bangkok is doing it backwards: Anyone getting a negative result will be allowed to return home, but those who test positive must take an RT-PCR test to confirm the infection.

Aswin said using antigen tests allows city hall to conduct tests on up to 2,000 people a day and laboratories to return test results within two days.

He added that the National Health Security Office will offer home and community isolation services or hospitalization to people whose rapid antigen test comes back positive.
