The Cabinet on Tuesday allocated 4.7 billion baht to pay for another 9.98 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine made by Pfizer Inc., which will go mainly to youths ages 12-17 and pregnant women.
Government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said the government is confident Thailand will have at least 100 million doses of coronavirus vaccines to inject into people’s arms before the end of the year.
Earlier, the Cabinet endorsed the procurement of more than 80 million doses worth 23 billion baht. Of course, those purchases came ridiculously late and allowed the alpha and then delta variants to devastate the country.
So far, Thailand has commitments for 61 million doses of AstraZeneca Plc.’s vaccine, 19 million doses from China’s Sinovac Biotech and and 20 million doses of Pfizer-BioNTech.
The government hopes, but has not confirmed, that the newly approved lot of about 10 million doses will arrive this calendar year.
