Japan Returnee, 63, Dies in Coronavirus Quarantine… Of Heart Disease

Thai Returnee from Japan Dies in Coronavirus Quarantine

A Korat man recently returned from Japan died in government quarantine Saturday, not of Covid-19, but a heart attack.

Pongsak Kidkao, 63, was found shortly after lunch when staff at the Bangkok quarantine hotel saw he had not taken his meal. He was found dead inside the room of apparent heart failure.

Military authorities running the quarantine center knew of Pongsak’s heart condition when he checked in after arriving on a Japan Airlines flight in Bangkok June 8. But they said he had enough medication for 14 days and had scheduled medical treatment for it in Nakhon Ratchasima afterward.

On Saturday night Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-Cha expressed his condolences to Somsak’s family and ordered the Defense Ministry to support and assist in returning the body home and any funeral expenses.

Prayut also directed all state quarantine hotels to pay closer attention to all medical needs of detainees and not simply focus on Covid-19.

Somsak had twice tested negative for the coronavirus in the past 12 days.
