Thailand to Prosecute Corrupt, Negligent Border Officers for Permitting Illegal Immigration

Tighter controls at the Betong border checkpoint in Yala.

The National Security Council will punish officials who allowed illegal migrants sneak into the country.

Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said Monday the NSC was discussing legal action against lenient and corrupt border officers who turned a blind eye or accepted bribes to permit illegal immigration.

In response to the latest outbreak of the coronavirus in Samut Sakhon Province, he said the Communicable Diseases Act and the Executive Decree on Public Administration in Emergency Situations are in place.

All provincial governors could exercise the laws to control the outbreak situations without having to impose other laws.

Besides, the Cabinet would tomorrow consider a new communicable diseases control law, Wissanu said.
