Thailand on Friday reported its first Covid19-related death in 108 days.

The 54-year-old man worked as an interpreter at the Labor Office in Riyadh. He had contributed to helping Thai workers overseas for more than 20 years.

He was infected with the coronavirus while in Saudi Arabia. His condition improved after being treated in an intensive care unit for a month. He was then transferred to Rajavithi Hospital on Sept. 2.

When he was admitted to the hospital in Bangkok, the patient was severely ill and was on a ventilator. He tested negative for coronavirus but chest x-rays showed severe lung damage, said Dr. Somsak Akksilp, the director-general of the Department of Medical Services.

He was pronounced dead at Rajavithi Hospital around noon today.

Thailand had not reported a coronavirus-related death since June 2 when an 80-year-old man who attended a religious gathering in Malaysia died in Narathiwat province. He had been Thailand’s 38th Covid-19 case.

The country has now reported 59deaths and 3,497 cases, with 111 people remining in hospital.
