Omnipresent chat app Line is bringing its Line TV streaming service to the U.S. and 18 other countries, again widening the audience for Thai-made content.
Currently only available in Thailand and Taiwan, Line TV will expand to Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, and Russia, among other markets, the company said. Oddly, the list does not include Line’s home country of Japan.
Line TV’s programming lineup features popular “lakorn” dramas and variety shows among the 40 programs on offer. The overwrought dramas are especially popular in South America, where TV features similar melodramatic fare.
While Line is best known chat, the Line TV service, which debuted in Thailand in 2015, now has more than 40 million users.
The platform carries shows from local TV stations as well as original content, an area it has worked to build up. Eight original Line TV titles have debuted on Netflix under an agreement announced in July.
Line Corp. and Netflix inked their agreement to stream eight original shows created by the social media network in Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan and 15 other markets.
