Food-Delivery Apps Pledge to Cut Single-Use Plastic

Leading food-delivery companies joined the government and state enterprises in a pledge to reduce use of single-use plastics in their services.

Environment Minister Varawut Silpa-archa presided over the Sept. 30 launch of the campaign to change consumer habits after plastic waste increased 15 percent from 5,500 tons to 6,300 tons a day since before the coronavirus lockdown.

Food-delivery services including Line Man, Foodpanda, Grab Food and Gojek joined along with the Pollution Control Department, Institute of Public Policy and Development and PTT Global Chemical Plc.

To achieve the goal, food delivery service providers will adjust their platforms to add opt-in forms for customers to reject single-use plastics.

Restaurants who participate in the campaign will be promoted on the applications to encourage both restaurant operators and consumers to refrain from using single-use plastics.

PTT Global Chemical CEO Kongkrapan Intarajang said the state enterprise supported and developed bioplastic pallets and green designs for products and packaging. It has worked with packaging manufacturers and is mapping out recycling plans for waste from food deliveries.

The owner of a Japanese restaurant in Bangkok’s Mengjai area said the restaurant cooperated with food delivery providers to allow customers to reject cutleries and to choose biodegradable boxes.

Apart from reducing global warming, it also helps reduce plastic waste that clog the city’s drains, leading to flooding problems in Bangkok.
