Scuba diving volunteers and the Royal Thai Navy removed about 550 kilograms of fishing nets from coral reefs off the Koh Kra islands in Nakhon Si Thammarat.

The Second Naval Area Command and participants from Prince of Songkla and Walailak universities conducted the environmental conservation mission near Hin Rua rock on Sept. 4-5.

Teams performed four dives over two days and collected three fishing nets weighing a total 550 kg.The gillnets covered about 600 sq. meters of coral reefs that were five to 15 meters under water and damaged about 80 percent of the reefs.

Officials assumed that the fishing nets had been there for more than a month.

The Thai Maritime Enforcement Command Center under the Second Naval Area Command and academics will work out plans to rehabilitate the damaged coral reefs.
