Newly signed Buriram United striker Marko Scepovic tested positive for the coronavirus while in quarantine before joining the seven-time Thai League 1 champion.

While the team not the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration did not confirm Scepovic’s diagnosis, the CCSA said it was one of two Serbian footballers who arrived on a Buriam United-chartered private jet on July 19 and gave his age as 29. Scepovic turned 29 on May 23.

The identity of the other Serbian signed by the football club, and on the plane, has never been disclosed.

Buriram United is making wholesale changes to its rearguard and have parted ways with Andres Tunez, Jung Jae-Yong, Ricardo Bueno and Bernardo Cuesta. It recently finalized its foreign player targets and dispatched a plane to bring them to Issan July 19 Along with Scepovic and the unnamed Serb, the team also imported Croatian center-back Renato Kelic most recently with HNK Cibalia of the Croatian second division.

The three footballers were given special dispensation to stay in alternative state quarantine in Buri Ram and legally could enter the country as they had both work permits and Thai Elite Card visas, said CCSA spokesman Dr. Taweesilp Visanuyothin.

Scepovic was found to have Covid-19 after his second test on July 27 and is receiving treatment at a hospital in Buri Ram, Taweesin said, adding that the CCSA reported one other case on Saturday.

The other case is a Finnish man who arrived from Denmark on July 27. He stayed in alternative state quarantine in Bangkok. He had tested positive in mid-May but never developed symptoms. This time he tested positive in Thailand on July 30, again without symptoms.

He has been admitted at a private hospital and was undergoing a disease investigation process.

Total Covid-19 cases rose to 3,312 comprising 2,444 locally infected people and 375 other cases found at state quarantine facilities. Of the total, 3,135 recovered and 119 others were in hospitals.

Buriram had a slow start to the season and were 11th with only four points from four games when the 2020 campaign was suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The season is scheduled to resume in September.
