Chiang Mai – Instead of placards and protests, groups of performance artists in this northern city are taking to the streets with a simple message: Freedom.

Fifteen performance artists from the local Lanyim Theater and three others from the newly formed Chiang Mai Performance Artist Group staged their own street-performance demonstrations at 5 p.m. July 27, standing at various points along the Old City moat and coveyed their own message through free-form art.

The artists called their demonstrations “HOPE / BREATHE / DE-” and their dancing, singing, sewing and other various actions drew crowds of curious onlookers.

Locals and foreigners alike watched for two hours as the artists moved and performed in unique ways exploring their interpretations of freedom of speech with their bodies.

The performance artists plan to have stage more demonstrations in the future. Contact them by email for more information or see their website.
