A Pattaya-area man arrested for allegedly trying to rape a Russian jogger has been released without charge, at least for now.
Kantheepob Thanachotsomboon, 37, was set free Saturday after police said an arrest warrant couldn’t be issued without a complaint from the victim, who has yet to give her statement to Nongprue Subdistrict police.
Police said Kantheepob confessed to assaulting Elena Zyalkova, 38, as she jogged around the Mabprachan Reservoir in Pong, outside Pattaya, May 18.
Police said Zyalkova is still recovering from her attack and hasn’t provided a statement accusing or identifying Katheepob. So they said they let him go.
The man claimed he stressed about family and debt issues and took out his frustration on the expat. Police believe, however, it was sexually motivated.
Nongprue police said they hope to have Zyalkova appear so that Kantheepob can be arrested, if he hasn’t fled the area by then.
