An American man is dead of a self-inflicted gunshot after stealing a handgun from a Chonburi shooting range and shooting twice at police.

Michael Giavasis, 25, died was found dead after 2:15 a.m. this morning inside his central Pattaya condominium after S.W.A.T. officers stormed the apartment, ending a three-hour standoff.

Chonburi deputy police chief Pol. Col. Korawat Hanpradit said Giavasis earlier that day had stolen a 9 mm. Glock handgun from a shooting range in Huay Yai. He shot twice at staffers trying to stop him, then escaped on a motorbike.

Police pursued but also were shot at by Giavasis before he managed to escape.

He resurfaced around 11:15 p.m. Monday when Pattaya police were called to the unidentified condominium in central Pattaya where he was waving the gun and arguing with 18-year-old Pitchakorn Thapana. When officers arrived, Giavasis fired off another shot, which richocheted and hit reporter Thiwakorn Kritmanee, 31, in the left foot.

Thiwakorn received first aid and was taken to Bangkok Hospital Pattaya.

The shooter then barricaded himself in his apartment while police evacuated the floor and public areas of the condo building and blocked off roads leading to the scene.

Giavasis refused to negotiate with police. Officers later contacted a friend who tried to call Giavasis, but got no answer.

Police stormed the room and found him dead.
