An ex-con who allegedly slashed and stabbed an elderly grandmother before robbing her outside Pattaya is behind bars after being captured in Rayong.
Somsak ‘Au’ Tipprapayamyam, 42, was apprehended at a guesthouse where he was spotted by other guests who saw his wanted poster on television.
A convicted thief, Somsak was only recently released from Rayong Prison, and had been staying with a friend near the Banglamung District convenience store run by Wirat Wijitsombat, 68.
He is accused of attacking her around midnight June 18 after tryng to obtain alcohol after the shop was closed. He was drunk and broke and got into an argument with the grandmother when he couldn’t pay, police said.
Determined to drink more, Somsak slashed Wirat’s neck and stabbed her before fleeing with the booze and 20,000 baht from the cash drawer.
From there, Provincial Police Region 2 investigators said Saturday, he fled on a friend’s motorbike to an all-night market in South Pattaya where he bought new closed and changed out of the bloody ones. He then drove to Beach Road where he ditched the friend’s bike, ran into the water and evaded police by swimming under a pier restaurant and escaping.
The next morning, police said, he hired a taxi to take him to the Rayong hotel.
Wirat was rushed into intensive care at a local hospital but is now out of danger.
Somsak, meanwhile, confessed and re-enacted the crime in front of police and the media Saturday. He was charged with robbery causing serious injury.
