Authorities have opened an investigation into a Thai returnee who jumped to his death from the top of a Pattaya hotel where he was being quarantined.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha extended his condolences to the family of Phon Prom-ngam, a Buriram native, who committed suicide on the second day after returning from Israel, said Defense Ministry spokesman Kongcheep Tantawanich.

He died at the Jomtien Palm Beach Hotel and his body was taken to Banglamung Hospital.

Local police, health and defense ministry officials are investigating how the man got to the roof and why he jumped, as well as reviewing procedures to prevent future incidents.

Thailand, meanwhile, recorded one new Covid-19 case in another state quarantine facility.

The new case is a 35-year old Indian national who arrived in Thailand from India on Aug. 8 on the same flight as 22 others who earlier tested positive for the coronavirus.

Cumulative infections in Thailand, to date, are 3,404, with 3,237 recoveries and 58 deaths.
