Phuket police on Wednesday charged three foreign friends of a Russian woman who fell from an eighth-floor condo in Phuket with recklessness causing death.
American Smith Antwaun, 38, Jordanian Ahmad Radi Mustafa Alatoom, 28, and Russian Natalia Kosenkova, 35, were arrested May 31, with Alatoom caught at the Phuket airport trying to flee.
The body of Evgeniia Smirnova, 35, was found about 4:30 a.m. May 31 at the Emerald Terrace condominium off Phra Barami Road in Patong District.
Police said the woman was very drunk when she climbed an exterior staircase between the seventh and eighth floors and fell. While the three initially were arrested on drug charges, stemming from marijuana found in their condo, Smirnova only had very high levels of alcohol in her system, police said.
Police chided all four – including the dead woman – for “behaving recklessly”.
The charges may not be the last. Police said the investigation continues, with officers looking into whether there was a dispute or physical assault that could lead to murder charges.
Three days into the intial probe, Phuket police were notified that the Royal Police Office in Bangkok would be taking over the investigation. National police chief Pol. Gen. Suwat Chaengyodsuk sent a team to the island to find reliable witnesses and employ forensic techniques to solve the case quickly and accurately.
Polcie said Smirnova arrived in Phuket on May 25. She was staying with the arrested friends in adjoining condos.
