A clash between Myanmar soldiers and ethnic troops near the Tak border impacted heavily on residents of the northern Thailand province as about 5,000 Burmese people fled their homeland across the Moei River.
The battle between Myanmar government forces and the Karen National Union resumed early Monday opposite Ban Don Chai village of Mae Tao Subdistrict in Mae Sot District.
People witnessed the worst fight in two weeks punctuated by rocket-propelled grenades and machine-gun fire. Locals in Mae Sot heard the explosions, even though they were 10 kilometers away.
Police from the Border Patrol Police Unit 346 patrolled a road along the Moei River on armored vehicles. Security officials were strictly guarding the border while local administrators told people near the border river to take shelter.
Some people drove away from the village for their safety while others remained at home to protect their property.
