So Close, Yet So Far: 19 Thais Stranded in Laos Finally Come Home

Thais Stranded in Laos Return to Thailand

Nineteen Thai workers have returned home after being stranded in Laos for five months by the coronavirus lockdown.

The workers arrived at the border crossing in Loei’s Ta Li District on Wednesday. All of them passed health screenings and were transferred to a hotel for a mandatory 14 days of quarantine.

Security officers said the returnees were workers at the Xayaburi dam, the hydroelectric dam on the lower Mekong River in Laos.

One said since the coronavirus pandemic began they were unable to travel due to lockdowns and border closures.
